13th Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Conference Decoding of Genome and Protein in the Post-Genome Era

2015/01/19

APBC 2015, the 13th Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Conference, was held at the National Chiao Tung University in Hsin-Chu, Taiwan from January 21 to 23. The College of Biological Science & Technology and the Institute of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology of the National Chiao Tung University, together with the Taiwan Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Society worked hand-in-hand to bring APBC, the largest forum of this subject in the Asia-Pacific region, to Taiwan with the goal for Taiwan’s research on bioinformatics to become further internationalized.

The Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Conference was founded in 2003 with its inaugural APBC conference held in Australia. Annual conferences have taken place in numerous countries including New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, China, India, Korea, and Canada. APBC 2015 covered 56 speeches and paper presentations as well as 50 poster presentations, with around 70% related to the topic “decoding of genome and protein in the post-genome era”. Three keynote speeches were given by Prof. Ann-Shyn Chiang of National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan), Prof. Satoru Miyano of the University of Tokyo (Japan), and Prof. Yixue Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (China), together with outstanding researchers and industrial practitioners from fifteen countries including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Germany, Denmark, India, Indonesia, Japan, U.K., Korea, Singapore, U.S.A., Thailand, and France all participating in the conference.

Thanks to the recent development of next-generation sequencing, the volume of big data increases exponentially for bioinformatics researchers and professionals to explore, analyze, and manage. The aims of APBC 2015 were, through discussion about various aspects of bioinformatics, to lead to in-depth and more complex theories on biomedicine and biotechnology, quickening the path of improvement for the research of life science, biomedicine, and biotechnology, ultimately improving the welfare of humans.

From the 76-meter-tall giant dragon main lantern area, visitors can admire the beauty of the exhibition center's magic carpet roof at night. As for the Green Museumbrary, the museum lobby adjacent to the park and the interior lights of the glass curtain wall at the administrative building facing Zhongke Road will also be illuminated, presenting visual transparency and the elegant artistic ambiance of the architecture.According to the Construction Bureau, the Taichung International Convention and Exhibition Center will be able to house 2,360 exhibition booths and a large international conference hall with 2,200 seats. International exhibitions and conferences held at the exhibition center will drive the development of the software, science, and industrial parks in central Taiwan. This will attract domestic and foreign companies to settle there, contributing to Taichung City Government's vision of "Prosperous Taichung, Wonderful Life". On the other hand, the Green Museumbrary, in addition to its distinctive architectural appearance, features the design principles of "innovation, people-oriented, and sharing". The museum and library both adopted co-constructed architecture, integrating various spaces within the buildings to stimulate visitor curiosity for knowledge exploration. The two buildings are independent yet interconnected in terms of shared resources. The Green Museumbrary's world-class architecture aims to inspire artistic readership and cultural dreams of Taichung's citizens.Source: Yahoo News https://tw.news.yahoo.com/%E5%8F%B0%E4%B8%AD%E5%9C%8B%E9%9A%9B%E6%9C%83%E5%B1%95%E4%B8%AD%E5%BF%83-%E7%B6%A0%E7%BE%8E%E5%9C%96%E9%BD%8A%E9%BB%9E%E7%87%88-102644411.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAACoGFpB2Nxncu5iypuwsgLM-hvRSKcXiYpIfcFtGC64p4PE0jnFQbEyWgoDRzMqUXlPGAY4yS5O7hoOsaYJ2p9GWOepQKj0myM89hTQyWT2RbCsg5tH8NBRNDdR-96VVLBq-byUevxt7nyGWUIe5pspwXhp_iV9XpFbdzQX8Rk_K

Taiwan Held Net Zero Event for MICE Industry - Travel Incentive Program for 2024 Announced

On December 19, MEET TAIWAN hosted a Sustainable MICE, Taking Strides Towards Net Zero sharing event. This event showcased the significant strides Taiwan has taken in sustainability and carbon reduction efforts over the past year, achieved through guidance and incentive measures in partnership with MICE stakeholders. To encourage international business travelers to extend their stays in Taiwan, the International Trade Administration (TITA) and the Taiwan Tourism Administration (TTA) collaborated to produce a travel incentive program. Scheduled to begin in 2024, the program will offer travel subsidies of up to NT$2,000 (approximately US$ 65) per person per visit and a maximum of NT$500,000 (approximately US$ 16,000) per event, aiming to promote the development of Taiwan's MICE and tourism industries. This year, MEET TAIWAN also launched a MICE carbon footprint calculator to assist organizers and exhibitors with quickly estimating carbon emissions of their events. The convention and exhibition Product Category Rules (PCR) were also established, paving the way for organizers of Taiwanese MICE activities to pursue ISO 14067 certification starting next year. With support from the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), 25 MICE industry entities successfully reduced their carbon emissions by 148 tons, averaging a 70% reduction. The event featured a certification ceremony for companies that have achieved international standards, plus the MICE Sustainability Awards. A highlight of the year was the collaboration between TITA and SEMI Taiwan, where the canvas used for a large banner at SEMICON Taiwan 2023 was recycled into reusable lunch bags and donated to students in disadvantaged communities, demonstrating an exemplary standard of sustainability and friendliness.Looking ahead, MEET TAIWAN will continue to support Taiwan's MICE industry in its pursuit of sustainable development and in enhancing its international competitiveness.
