The Miaoli Dragon Bombing Event, a part of Taiwan’s vibrant dragon dance culture, is the first among the twelve most important Hakka Festivals in Taiwan to take place this year. The Miaoli City Office began the Dragon Bombing event for Miaoli Hakka people in 1999 and has been aggressively promoting the event through strategic marketing, continually adding cultural and innovative ideas each year. This original local folklore festival activity has now become one of the four most popular lantern activities island wide, these being Sky Lanterns in Pingxi, Beehive Firecrackers in Yenshui, Dragon Bombing in Miaoli, and Bombing HanDan in Taitung. Based on the lunar calendar, this year the event will take place from February 27 through March 7. The event's mission is to industrialize the culture and add culture to industry, as Miaoli people are devoted and enthusiastically participate in the event. The joint effort of both the government and the public will no doubt keep this traditional festival culture of dragon dance long-lasting and rich in content.
Dragon Bombing is a Hakka custom. As dragons dance through streets and business and home compounds, Miaoli people set off firecrackers to greet the dragon. On one hand to beckon the spirituality of the dragon, and on the other to attract good fortune and welcome a prosperous new year. The Dragon Bombing Festival in Miaoli is comprised of six parts: pasting the dragon, dotting the eyes, greeting the dragon, bombing the dragon, strolling with the dragon, and dragon’s ascension. They are collectively called the Six Steps of Bombing the Dragon. Among the six steps, greeting/bearing the dragon, bombing the dragon, and strolling with (following) the Dragon are considered more distinctive features, though each step is full of its own characteristics and cultural meanings. Miaoli people feel reborn from this sacred process.
To pass on this special Miaoli dragon culture, the organizer will hold craft workshops for parents and children together at the Dragon Bombing Museum. Seeking to arouse and increase interest in the dragon event, the intent is for the younger generation to understand and appreciate the culture and history of dragon bombing. The four activities include paper-craft fortune dragon figure, making printed cloth straps for the dragon, dragon figure made of paper mâché, and clocks with dragon bombing canvas, with professional teachers on site. Parents are encouraged to take their children to visit the Dragon Bombing Museum together and hand-make a dragon.
