The 12th Penghu Fireworks Festival began April 20th and will continue through June 25th, 2015. According to County Mayor Cheng Kuang-Fu, this year’s festival features shows by designers of the Taiwan National Day fireworks show, as well as returning Chinese fireworks teams who received wide acclaim last year. Award winning firework designers from other countries have also been invited to participate in the lighting up of the island’s sky with a feast of light, color, and sound.
Themed “Blessed Pescadores–Shine Over the World”, firework shows will be held every Monday and Thursday at Penghu's Guanyinting Park, with additional performances on Mother’s Day (May 5th) and the Dragon Boat Festival (June 20th). A Shopping Festival is also organized in the tourist commercial area, where on the spot lucky draws will be held for all visitors of the fireworks festival, with prizes that lead up to winning a car.
Mayor Cheng also mentioned this year’s festival will not only showcase high-altitude as well as around-the-scene fireworks, it will for the first time present floating fireworks and underwater explosions, designed especially for the exceptional coastal scenery of Penghu. Aside from the crafters of the National Day fireworks, the festival also invited the design team from Changsha Fireworks of China, to return for another performance after their popularity from the previous year. Festival first-timers will include teams from Israel, Czech Republic, Philippines, and Thailand, all winners of international fireworks competitions to participate in lighting Penghu's night sky.
Blessed with rich tourism resources, Penghu was elected as one of the World’s Ten Best Secret Islands by Lonely Planet in their Best in Travel 2011 guide, plus became a member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club. Expectedly, more and more businesses are investing in Penghu, with groups such as Ever Rich and Far Eastern Air Transport planning to open hotels on the archipelago, while the Sheraton Group will open a five-star Four Points Hotel this year right next to the Port of Magong, Pier 3.
Penghu welcomes more than 1,000,000 visitors annually, 90% of which come from Taiwan, 3% from mainland China, and 1% from the rest of the world, mainly Japan, USA, and Europe. In order to attract more international travelers, the government started to allow applications for visa on arrival for visitors coming from Xiamen, and direct flight connections were also established with the Chinese cities of Changsha, Qingdao, and Nanjing. With future plans outlined for flight connections with Hangzhou, Jinan, and Hong Kong, and a ferry connection with Xiamen, it is anticipated that the number of Chinese tourists to Penghu will surge this year.
