Further enhancing internationalization of domestic academic research, responding to global technology and industry trends, and strengthening the international competitiveness of Taiwan’s IT industry, the National Tsing Hua University Department of Computer Science once again won the campaign to host the 20th International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Systems (ICPADS) from December 16th to 19th at the National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu.
ICPADS was initiated and organized by the former president of National Tsing Hua University, Professor Wen-Tzun Chen. The first ICPADS was organized by the University in 1992, and Professor Wen-Tzun Chen served as the first President of the General Assembly. After years of rotation, ICPADS was held alternately in Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, and later developed into a significant international academic conference approved by the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) with several countries, such as the United States (2004, 2006), Australia (2008), China (2009, 2010), and Singapore (2012), actively campaigning for hosting rights.
Recollecting the rapid evolution of the field of parallel and distributed systems, computers with parallel processing capabilities used to be expensive and bulky, but with the cost reduction of computing resources and the popularization of the Internet, the threshold for constructing parallel and distributed systems has dropped significantly with several new services emerging on its foundation. Rapid advances in the technology of parallel and distributed systems not only stimulate more research themes, they also initiate more opportunities for innovation, such as self-distributed, parallel computing and cloud computing developed from grid computing technology, focusing on the intensive processing of large amounts of data. It has become quite an important field of research in both academia and industry in recent years.
The conference consisted of seven seminars and three keynote speeches, with many well-known experts and scholars in the field invited to exchange and discuss the latest revelations. Participants learned about numerous related, extended, and novel applications and technology through the conference, some which may even change the way professional practitioners and the general public utilize information technology in the near future.
