The 2015 Ikegami Bamboo Raft Festival began May 16 and will continue to June 7, 2015. The festival features a range of activities such as a bamboo raft race, an aboriginal fishing contest, a Chihshang rice conformance promotion, Chihshang free range chicken tasting, and covers the topics of Hakka heritage, agriculture, culture, and other activities. The location was selected by the organizer to promote Chihshang Township’s Dapo Pond (Da-Po-Chih) and nearby tourist sites as top options for visitors both from home and abroad, furthermore to offer a fresh perspective of unique country scenes, culture, and the rice industry of Chihshang Township.
The Ikegami Bamboo Raft Festival aims to pass on to younger generations the core spirit of the Hakka tradition and culture through activities such as Hakka music and dance performances, Hakka bowl coloring, Hakka children’s DIY toys, and Hakka spun silk dyeing, and more. By acknowledging and celebrating Hakka traditional culture, it is hoped young people will carry on the culture and spirit. In addition, to allow the general public more access to aboriginal culture, build a better platform for communication, and participate more in the caring function of social education, an aboriginal agricultural products and culture festival is also being held in conjunction with the bamboo raft festival. Activities of the aboriginal festival include an aboriginal salute, dance performances, cuisine tasting, DIY handicrafts, and an agricultural products exhibition (millet wine, aboriginal clothing, knitting, and dyeing), and much more.
Half a century ago, bamboo rafts were a common and plentiful sight on Chihshang Township’s Dapo Pond. The rustic scene of hardworking fishermen poling and rowing across the pond faded with change of the economic style. To revive the unique cultural atmosphere of Dapo Pond and to promote local tourism, the modern bamboo raft race was designed with innovation and entertainment in mind.
A joint effort of the central and Taitung County Government, related practitioners, and local associations, the tourist attractions and activities surrounding the Dapo Pond area are now well developed and gaining in popularity. It is expected that more tourist resources, such as Hakka Cuisine, Hakka cultural activities, and the natural scenery may be integrated to make the area the number-one choice for outdoor activity lovers.
