Heralding Taiwan's halal-related industries into the market are more than 850 businesses, restaurants, and hotels with halal certification. Taiwan is already ranked as the 5th best tourist destination of non-Organization of Islamic Cooperation countries in the 2018 MasterCard’s Global Muslim Tourism Index (GMTI). It is obvious that Taiwan's efforts in establishing a Muslim-friendly environment have proved positive.
Statistically, there is one Muslim for every four other people in the world, highlighting the potential of the Muslim halal market for Taiwan. Walter M. S. Yeh, President & CEO of TAITRA, said that before entering the halal market, it is necessary for a company to first understand the needs and habits of Muslims, including products, food, cosmetics, and such, which must meet halal certification standards. Then the next step is to acquire halal certification.
Since establishing the Taiwan Halal Center in April 2017, TAITRA has been assisting Taiwanese businesses with acquiring halal certifications. For exports, Taiwan is actively entering halal markets such as Malaysia, India, and Indonesia. Efforts also include focusing on countries like Singapore and Japan that have large numbers of Muslim tourists. For example, some halal products made in Taiwan can already be found in various sales channels in Malaysia. At the same time, halal market opportunities for the Tokyo Olympics in Japan will also be a focus.
Besides exports, another important goal is to establish a friendly environment for Muslims in Taiwan. In the past, when Muslim business guests and tourists visited Taiwan, they may have thought that Taiwan was very inconvenient for them. After more than a year of hard work, Taiwan’s halal-friendly environment has earned international recognition. Taiwan welcomes more Muslim friends for business activities and tourism, and will continue to make Taiwan more Muslim-friendly, especially in the southern and central regions, working together with local governments to achieve the best results.
