Assisting MICE Enterprises in Carbon Reduction

Assisting MICE Enterprises in Carbon Reduction

In light of the recent global net-zero trends, countries worldwide are actively pursuing their climate commitments to achieve "net-zero emissions" by 2050. The MICE industry, encompassing Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions, plays a pivotal role in the service sector. It should take a pioneering stance in implementing sustainable carbon reduction efforts, harnessing its influence to steer related industries towards contributing to a sustainable environment.

  1. Carbon Footprint Calculator & Evaluation System

This website was officially launched in September 2023, with plans to introduce an English version in 2024. Through this platform, we offer assistance in calculating the carbon footprint of MICE events and assessing the transportation carbon footprint of attendees. Additionally, it evaluates a company's carbon reduction capabilities.

    1. Carbon Footprint Calculator

An intuitively designed website that calculates the total carbon emissions based on input data (e.g., kilometers traveled by transportation, weight of materials used for booth decoration). It aids MICE enterprises in formulating effective carbon reduction plans.

    2. Carbon Reduction Capability Evaluation System

This system employs a straightforward questionnaire to evaluate the implementation of carbon reduction practices (e.g., the use of plastic materials in displays). Upon questionnaire completion, the website generates customized reports. These reports assist MICE industry professionals in gaining a clear understanding of carbon reduction concepts and practices, while also providing insights into how other companies have successfully implemented carbon reduction measures for reference.

  2. Providing Assistance in Carbon Reduction

Our team of carbon reduction experts provides guidance to 25 MICE companies annually. This guidance primarily focuses on travel, freight & logistics, food & food waste, energy, and production & waste to offer improvement recommendations. Upon completing the assistance, MEET TAIWAN will share best practices and encourage more MICE stakeholders to implement energy-saving and carbon reduction measures.

  3. Product Category Rules for Conferences & Exhibitions

In 2008, Taiwan's Executive Yuan introduced the Framework of Taiwan's Sustainable Energy Policy, aiming to implement nationwide energy-saving and carbon reduction policies with the objective of reducing carbon emissions by one kilogram per capita daily. To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Environment established a labeling system for domestic products with carbon footprint information. Taiwan is currently the 11th country globally to introduce a carbon-footprint label for products.
The Product Category Rules (PCR) provide guidelines for conducting Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA), outlining factors to consider, including but not limited to:

    1. System boundaries, specifying the processes and stages of the product's life cycle that would be evaluated.
    2. Declared/functional unit: Determining the quantity, weight, and service life of the product under assessment.
    3. Defining factors such as the use phase and end-of-life options.

Applying the PCR for "Conferences, Exhibitions, and other relevant events" will assist in conducting a standardized carbon audit for MICE events and evaluating the effectiveness of carbon reduction efforts.
MEET TAIWAN will continue to implement the practice of providing assistance in carbon reduction for MICE enterprises and will update new achievements on this page.
